Smart Media

SmartMedia card is called SM card for short, which was released by Toshiba in 1995. Smart media card can carry data transfer rate up to 2MB per second. Smart media is available in different capacity including 2, 4, 8 16, 32, 64 and 128 MB. Considered the substitute of floppy disk, it was named as "Solid State Floppy Disk Card" (SSFDC) at first. With thickness of 0.76mm, SmartMedia card was once the lightest and thinnest storage card. SmartMedia card was widely used in electronic devices like digital camera at that time.

Smart media card consists of flash memory chip that are connected to plane electrode by bonding wires. Smart media can read, write and erase memory in small block of data that helps you to select data which you want to save. This is advantage of smart media card over the other memory card.

Situations that may lead to data loss problems :-

Formatting Errors:

In order to transfer files from your Smart Media card to computer, you may get an error message saying like “The card is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?” Without paying attention, if you give command to format the card, then all the files present in it becomes inaccessible.

Virus infection:

If your PC is infected by virus or worm then there may be the possibility of losing data from it. However if you connect your Smart Media Card, then the virus may transfer from your PC to Smart Media Card and hence makes files inaccessible.

Improperly Removing Smart Media Card:

If you remove your Smart Media Card improperly from your computer, then the data doesn’t get saved completely or skips saving section which results in data loss from it.

Human Errors:

Accidentally deleting some of the photos from the Smart Media card in hurry to preview them or formatting card on computer instead of camera can lead to loss of precious photos, videos or music files stored on Smart media card.
